This paper conducts a comprehensive study of the Lagrangian coordinate system with application to traffic modeling and highway state estimation. Our analysis is motivated by the practical problems of freeway traffic monitoring and estimation using multi-source data including mobile devices and fixed sensors. We conduct rigorous mathematical analysis on the Hamilton-Jacobi representation of the Lighthill-Whitham-Richards model in the transformed coordinates, and derive explicit and closed-form solution with piecewise affine initial, boundary, and internal conditions, based on the variational principle. A numerical study of the Mobile Century field experiment demonstrates some unique features and computational advantages of the Lagrangian-based models.

This paper gives a new improved model in decision-making based on rough sets theory and hierarchical cluster analysis. In the view of the phenomenon that people can only obtain the information table but can't get the decision table when dealing with problems in practical applications, we use the hierarchical cluster analysis as a tool to improve the traditional rough sets theory and construct the equivalence relation to expand the information table into decision table. Then we do the empirical study, which can validate the rationality and validity of our method.

Immunohistochemistry (IHC) is one of the most important adjunctive techniques in surgical pathology. Quality controls are essential for staining interpretation. The most common controls are cut from the formalin-fixed, paraffin-embedded tissue blocks in advance. In contrast, we developed paraffin-embedded tissue fragment suspension (PETFS), a novel method in liquid form, for quality control preparation. The liquid form controls were cut from the donor formalin-fixed, paraffin-embedded paraffin blocks, stored in the 4°C fridge easily, and added to the top and bottom of the test slide directly by pipetting. The tissue fragments from the PETFS had a comparable IHC staining pattern to that of the control sections from the original donor blocks. Over a 180-day testing period, the IHC staining pattern and intensity remained strong and specific. The clinical value of PETFS method was further validated by their successful application as controls for the expression of estrogen receptor, prog...

The decrease of microRNA-452 (miR-452) in gliomas promoted stem-like features and tumorigenesis. However, the role of miR-452, especially in regulating cancer stem cells (CSCs) in hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) remains ambiguous. We enriched stem-like HCC cells by serial passages of hepatospheres with chemotherapeutic agents. Stem-like characteristics including the capabilities of chemo-resistance, stemness-related gene expression profiling, self-renewal, tumorigenicity and metastasis formation were detected. MiR-452 was markedly increased in the chemo-resistant hepatospheres and human HCC tissues. and the overexpression of miR-452 in HCC patients predicted poor overall survival. MiR-452 significantly promoted stem-like characteristics in vitro and in vivo. Further, Sox7 was identified as the direct target of miR-452, which could physically bind with β-catenin and TCF4 in the nucleus and then inhibit the activity of Wnt/β-catenin signaling pathway. Finally, the combined chemothreapy...

ABSTRACT The basic concepts of the rough set theory (RST) are introduced. An example of the rough set theory application to the chemical solvents selection problem (CSSP) is presented. Through the RST, we get a good multi-attributes decision-making effect in the chemical solvents selection. This work demonstrates how the use of RST in chemical process development by allowing efficient and reliable improvement of a given synthetic step. And other numerous earlier applications of rough set theory to the various scientific domains suggest that it also can be a useful tool for the analysis of inexact, uncertain, or vague chemical data.

Microscopic simulation models need to be calibrated to represent realistic local traffic conditions. Traditional calibration methods are conducted by searching for the model parameter set that minimizes the discrepancies of certain macroscopic metrics between simulation results and field observations. However, this process could easily lead to inappropriate selection of calibration parameters and thus erroneous simulation results. This paper proposes a video-based approach to incorporate direct measurements of car-following parameters into the process of VISSIM model calibration. The proposed method applies automated video processing techniques to extract vehicle trajectory data and utilizes the trajectory data to determine values of certain car-following parameters in VISSIM. This paper first describes the calibration procedure step by step, and then applies the method to a case study of simulating traffic at a signalized intersection in VISSIM. From the field-collected video footage, trajectories of 1229 through-movement vehicles were extracted and analyzed to calibrate three car-following parameters regarding desired speed, desired acceleration, and safe following distance, respectively. The case study demonstrates the advantages and feasibility of the proposed approach.
